MazonDel: /* Mode Shape */ Added info about the dielectric.

This is a location for assorted information concerning EM Drives. Likely applies to all current experimental efforts.

Conservation of Energy Violation
Doctor White has proposed that the EM Drive is capable of producing constant thrust at a constant power output. User frobnicat has shown (in the following text and image) that if this were to be true, then the EM Drive could be utilized as a source of unlimited energy. This of course constitutes a violation of Conservation of Energy.

"As often remarked : for any propellantless device yielding "given constant thrust for given constant power" (ie. a definite thrust/power ratio) there is a velocity relative to a power feedback loop system above which net power surplus can be generated (indefinitely, wear apart).
This velocity is simply the inverse of the thrust/power ratio : V (m/s) = power (W) / thrust (N)." -frobnicat

<img src="http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=29276.0;attach=619549;image" style="width:20%">

On the assumption that the results provided by the various experimenting groups are valid, then one of the following two options as provided by user deltamass and clarified by user frobnicat must be true. The options are as follows:

Option 1: Energy is conserved, but there is a preferred rest frame. In essence, the drive has a maximum change in velocity (a decreasing acceleration curve) that it can impart irrespective of its starting velocity. The idea of a preferred rest frame is at odds with general relativity.

Option 2: An apparent breach of conservation of energy is possible, where the mechanism by which conservation of energy is maintained is as yet unknown. An example of a possible solution to this problem is that the drive could in some way be emitting tachyons.

Tachyons are fictional particles that can travel faster than the speed of light. Sending signals faster than light, leads to violations of causality, see: Tachyonic Antitelephone.

Since option 1 leads to a violation of general relativity and option 2 leads to a violation of causality, one concludes that, with constant input power supplied to the EM Drive, the acceleration cannot be constant. As remarked by WarpTech the acceleration must decrease with increasing velocity, as per Newton's 2nd law:

Acceleration = Thrust / Mass = Power / (Mass*Velocity)

So, for constant input power to the EM Drive (and constant vehicle mass), the vehicle's acceleration must decrease in inverse proportion to the vehicle's velocity. To achieve constant acceleration, increasing power must be supplied to the EM Drive, in proportion to the increasing velocity.

Mode Shape
See calculations pertaining to the relationship between thrust and mode shape at Notsosureofit's post and Rodal's response.

An EM Drive is a cavity resonator that uses the Quality Factor Q to achieve greater response. There is definitely a peak resonant frequency to achieve the highest Q, though besides Q and frequency, mode shape must also be considered. The shape of the electric and magnetic fields inside the cavity at a given frequency.

The mode-shape to frequency relation is very sensitive to the exact dimensions of the cavity. However, a dielectric can be used to help force a selected mode shape upon the cavity.

Acceleration = Thrust / Mass = Power / (Mass*Velocity)

Acceleration = Thrust / Mass = Power / (Mass*Velocity)

So, for constant input power to the EM Drive (and constant vehicle mass), the vehicle's acceleration must decrease in inverse proportion to the vehicle's velocity. To achieve constant acceleration, increasing power must be supplied to the EM Drive, in proportion to the increasing velocity.
At constant input power, the thrust, and therefore the acceleration, must decrease with time, to ensure that the spacecraft's (change in) velocity never exceeds 2*Power/Thrust. Effectively, White proposes that the maximum velocity possibly achievable for these EM Drives is 2*PowerInput/ThrustForce. This energy constraint is known even from Sutton's textbook on Elements of Rocket Propulsion (equation 19-1 Rocket propulsion elements 7th edition- Sutton).

The higher the ThrustForce/InputPower, the lower the maximum velocity of an EM Drive: MAXIMUM VELOCITY OF EM DRIVE = 2 /(thrustForce/PowerInput)
#(Brady TE mode) ThrustForce/power: 0.00002131 Newton/Watt --> MaximumVelocity = 2/0.00002131 m/s = 93853 m/s = 93.85 km/s
The maximum velocity of the EM Drive is inversely proportional to Q: Therefor the higher the Q, the lower the maximum velocity.
#MAXIMUM VELOCITY OF EM DRIVE = 2 /(thrustForce/PowerInput)
#MAXIMUM VELOCITY OF EM DRIVE ~ (2 /(Q*otherParameters))

Kinetic Energy
The frame-of-reference kinetic energy issues (for non-relativistic spacecraft speeds) are eliminated by the definition of constant acceleration as acceleration=(delta velocity)/(delta time) so that (delta velocity)=acceleration*(delta time). Since from Newton's 2nd law, acceleration=ThrustForce/Mass, the change in velocity is uniquely defined in terms of: ThrustForce, total Mass of the spacecraft and DeltaTime (regardless of velocity-frame-of-reference) directly as (delta velocity)=(ThrustForce/Mass)*(delta time). The intrinsic definition of the change in KineticEnergy of the spacecraft under constant acceleration:
*deltaKineticEnergy = (1/2)*Mass*((delta velocity)^2)
*deltaKineticEnergy = (1/2)*Mass*([(ThrustForce/Mass)*(delta time) ]^2)

For the EM Drive to make any sense as a closed system it implies having memory of its time-history in order to never exceed the critical velocity at which (for constant InputPower throughout the time period (delta time)):

*InputPower*(delta time) = (1/2)*Mass*[(ThrustForce/Mass)*(delta time) ]^2

If the EM drive conserves momentum by interacting with the QuantumVacuum for example, we have an open system where momentum will be flowing in or out of the cavity, and therefore the open system should be taken into account in the conservation of kinetic energy (which we have not done) in order to arrive at a satisfactory answer.

The mode-shape to frequency relation is very sensitive to the exact geometrical dimensions of the cavity.
Velocity

#(Brady TE mode) ThrustForce/power: 0.00002131 Newton/Watt --> MaximumVelocity = 2/0.00002131 m/s = 93853 m/s = 93.85 km/s
#(Prof. Juan Yang et.al. China) ThrustForce/power: 0.000290 Newton/Watt --> MaximumVelocity = 2/0.000290 m/s = 6897 m/s = 6.90 km/s
#(Cannae Superconducting) ThrustForce/power: 0.0009524 Newton/Watt --> MaximumVelocity = 2/0.0009524 m/s = 2100 m/s = 2.10 km/s

#(Brady TE mode) ThrustForce/power: 0.00002131 Newton/Watt --> MaximumVelocity = 2/0.00002131 m/s = 93853 m/s = 93.85 km/s
#(Prof. Juan Yang et.al. China) ThrustForce/power: 0.000290 Newton/Watt --> MaximumVelocity = 2/0.000290 m/s = 6897 m/s = 6.90 km/s
#(Cannae Superconducting) ThrustForce/power: 0.0009524 Newton/Watt --> MaximumVelocity = 2/0.0009524 m/s = 2100 m/s = 2.10 km/s

<strong>Welcome to the EM Drive wiki.</strong>

This site is a repository of the current information available for the EM Drive project currently underway at NASA Eagleworks. The goal is to present all the background documentation in one place, so people following the forum threads can quickly get up to speed on what has been previously discussed.

Please note that this is an unmoderated, community-run site that discusses a rather controversial topic. As such, anyone is free to write whatever she/he wants regarding her/his own work or posts regarding the EM Drive. However, other people's work (whether they be posts in the NasaSpaceFlight.com forums or elsewhere) should only be linked or quoted verbatim (but never paraphrased). This will prevent a repeat of the problems witnessed in the past due to the false, misleading reports in the media about the EM Drive research done by NASA Eagleworks.
# The truncated cone EM thruster was restrained by the torsional spring constant of the torsional pendulum used for measurement. The torsional spring constant effectively acts like a spring attached to a wall (the difference being that in the NASA Eagleworks test we have a torsional pendulum where the EM Drive performs a rotation instead of a rectilinear motion)
# The truncated cone EM thruster was initially at rest (prior to power input).
# A time-varying displacement (effectively due to a rotation around the torsional axis) was recorded and thus a force was calculated by NASA Eagleworks using the known constants of the system.
# We have verified this: we modeled NASA Eagleworks torsional pendulum, and furthermore analyzed the data using Fourier Transforms to obtain the Power Spectral Density and the Autocorrelation of the response.

At present, the primary thread providing information to this wiki can be accessed at this location.

Frequently Asked Questions - A good place to start.

Possible Error Sources - Attempts to explain anomalous thrust via experimental error or 'conventional' means.

Building - A few people are trying to build their own.

Experimental Results - Experimental data provided by currently investigating groups.

Theory - While there's no consensus on any of this, here are various attempts to support (and debunk) it.

Useful Documentation - A list of all documentation referenced in the thread.
