Percentage of Snaps In Slot
The proportion of snaps a receiver makes in the slot can be a good indicator for their ability to run routes deep. However, it's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's skills as some receivers excel in the slot, but cannot play deep, and vice versa.
Alshon Jeffrey, for example, leads the league in goals per game (4.8), but is only ranked 6th when it comes to the position that scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets come from the outside, and it's hard to score a first-down on a wide-open deep route in that setting.
On the other hand, some receivers excel in playing inside, but struggle on the perimeter. Robby Anderson, for instance was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He ran 74% of his route in the slot, as opposed to just 26% on boundary routes. This is an enormous difference that shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when aligned to the slot.
Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, is in the middle of the field most of the time on his passes and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However he also ran 51% of his perimeter routes in the last season and is a top performer in one-on-one coverage.
Speed receivers are more efficient when they align inside. They can be targeted further down the field, and often face one-on-1 coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five.
On the other hand we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able generate pressures in the passing game and have McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore having the highest tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). By using McDuffie in the slot when they are running nickel or dime packages, and then placing him on the outside of base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his abilities. In addition, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been a huge benefit when playing in the slot.
Percentage of Snaps Outside
While top NFL receivers such as Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald and Baldwin excel on the perimeter but their slot counterparts are just as effective. As a whole wide receivers with a high slot receiver grade score touchdowns around the same rate as players who are on the perimeter. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers compared to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.
It's also interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, since he plays slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than many of the players on this list. This is an excellent opportunity to increase matchup benefits for your team. Lamb also plays at the X-position and makes huge plays outside. Lamb isn't as powerful as the other players in this list, however he's still a high-graded wide receiver who is well-suited to the Cowboys scheme.
Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player capable of putting up huge numbers on both types of targets. He is one of the best players in the league at throwing throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a fantastic contested-catch player.
Another player on this list who's a true slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has been positioned in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a valuable part of his team's defensive team. On the other hand, he's struggled to block passes from the outside and has been able to give the negative EPA against these types of targets. This is because he's playing with linebackers and safety who cannot match Hilton's speed, size, and ability to run routes.
